Sydney Opera House tour (and Carmen!)
I was lucky enough to go on a tour of the opera house and then, an hour and a half later, get to see Carmen from the loges (essentially the cheap side wings but my view was actually good). The tour was fascinating. Curly told us about the self-cleansing roof tiles and the chicken that fell into the orchestra pit. We watched excerpts from a documentary that says though the winning design, a rough sketch, broke a couple of the competition rules it was selected as being by far the most original and the best use of a narrow peninsula. It was estimated at $7m taking 3 years to complete. The end figures were $102m and 16 years! Now it is a world heritage site. Such is the power of a unique vision.
