Wanaka: Lake and vineyard

A standout among drives, over the Crown ranges and rolling hills brought me to Wanaka, just over an hour from Queenstown. I walked to Eely point for Island and peninsula views. Some lucky people were camping there and drinking in lake views. Had a great flat white at Cafe Gusto. I walked the other way around the lake and up a dusty hill to the Rippon winery. There they offered free tastings of eight wines including a Gamay rose, a lovely young Pinot noir and young and older Rieslings. Views from the winery were better than all others! Perched under parasols we enjoyed the wine and views of a wedding in the foreground. Best of all was a more attractive lake trail to bring me back to Wanaka.
